Greenland has warned a US oil company connected to President Donald Trump after drilling equipment was reportedly brought to the island’s eastern coast without the permits required to begin exploration. British media reported that Greenlandic authorities have yet to authorize drilling in the Jameson Land area, where the Texas-based company believes significant oil reserves may exist.

The Telegraph reported that machinery intended for exploratory drilling was transported to Greenland last month. The island’s Department of Industry and Minerals said the company had not obtained the necessary government approvals and indicated that a formal warning would be issued to the license holder.Under Greenlandic rules, exploratory drilling cannot begin until the relevant authorities grant permission.

Texas company backs major Arctic oil project

The exploration effort is being financed by Greenland Energy, a Texas-based company founded last year. The firm has acquired a majority interest in the project in exchange for providing financial backing and estimates that the Jameson Land region could contain crude oil resources worth as much as $1 trillion.

The dispute has emerged as US interest in Greenland has intensified. The Arctic territory, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has increasingly featured in Trump’s strategic and political statements.

Trump renews focus on Greenland

The controversy followed reports from residents who observed drilling equipment being brought ashore. Trump later shared an AI-generated image on his Truth Social account depicting himself overlooking a Greenlandic settlement alongside the message “Hello, Greenland!”

Trump had previously triggered international criticism in January 2025 after declining to exclude the use of military force to acquire Greenland. He argued at the time that the island was important to US national security.

Although Trump has since moderated his language, he has described Greenland as “vital” to his proposed Golden Dome missile-defense system.

Company rejects link to annexation plans

Greenland Energy recently added Carol Craig, a US Navy veteran involved in the exploration project, to its board. The company has also brought in former television personality Dr. Phil McGraw to host a documentary series focused on its Arctic activities.

The company has rejected suggestions that its oil venture is connected to any US effort to annex Greenland. Chairman Larry Swets acknowledged in June that a representative had incorrectly told local residents that authorization for the equipment landing was already in place.

“Our enthusiasm for the project led us to communicate in a way that created confusion,” Swets said.

Greenland Energy says talks remain positive

In a letter to shareholders issued Thursday, Greenland Energy said discussions with Greenlandic regulators had been constructive. The company said it remained optimistic about obtaining the approvals needed to proceed with drilling.

Greenland’s position means the project cannot move into the drilling phase until the required regulatory process is completed, keeping the future of the Arctic oil exploration effort dependent on authorization from local authorities.
