Sudanese army air defenses on Thursday responded to a drone attack targeting Omdurman, west of the capital Khartoum, for the second consecutive day, eyewitnesses told Anadolu.
Drone attacks on capital region
Ground-based air defenses locked onto the unmanned aerial vehicles as they approached western parts of the city, witnesses said. No immediate reports of casualties or material damage emerged from the interception. The El-Fasher Resistance Committee, an activist group monitoring the conflict, reported that drones belonging to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces were observed flying over Omdurman, Bahri and Khartoum.
Multiple explosions rocked the area as military defenses engaged the aircraft, according to the committee. The attacks followed similar strikes on Wednesday that targeted Bahri and Omdurman in the central Khartoum metropolitan area, along with Atbara and Ad-Damir in northern River Nile state and El-Obeid, the capital of southern North Kordofan state. Local sources attributed those attacks to the RSF.
Civil war background
Sudan plunged into civil war in April 2023 when fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the RSF over plans to integrate the paramilitary force into the regular military. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, triggering one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
