Türkiye and Libya have agreed to closely coordinate an investigation into a plane crash near Ankara that claimed the life of Libya’s army chief. Türkiye and Libya are jointly advancing an investigation into a fatal aircraft crash near Ankara, with judicial authorities from both countries confirming close coordination. The probe follows Tuesday’s incident that resulted in the death of Libya’s army chief, prompting high-level legal engagement between Ankara and Tripoli to clarify the circumstances surrounding the crash.

As part of the joint effort, Libyan Criminal Investigation Department chief Maj. Gen. Mahmoud Ashour led a delegation to the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. Turkish Chief Public Prosecutor Gokhan Karakose, alongside deputy prosecutors assigned to the case, provided a detailed briefing on investigative steps taken so far and the scope of forensic and technical reviews underway.

Commitment to legal cooperation

In a statement, Turkish prosecutors said both sides reaffirmed their determination to work together throughout the investigation. Authorities emphasized that all findings and documents may be shared in line with applicable legal procedures, reflecting Türkiye’s approach to international judicial cooperation in aviation incidents involving foreign officials.

Regional context and next steps

The crash near Türkiye’s capital has drawn regional attention, given Ankara’s role as a key partner for Libya in security and institutional cooperation. Officials indicated that coordination will continue as evidence is assessed, with the aim of ensuring accountability and a clear, fact-based conclusion to the investigation.
