Türkiye and Nigeria have elevated their bilateral relations, signing a series of agreements during Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's official visit to Ankara. The accords, covering trade, defense, and security, aim to deepen a strategic partnership between the two nations, with a clear goal of reaching a $5 billion trade volume.

Key agreements signed to boost economic ties

A critical outcome of the summit was the signing of a joint declaration to establish a Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO). Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat stated this framework would "strengthen institutional economic cooperation." Alongside JETCO, a Memorandum of Understanding on Halal Quality Infrastructure was inked, measures designed to create new opportunities for business communities in both Türkiye and Nigeria.

Defense cooperation and trade diversification

The partnership extends significantly into the defense sector, reinforcing existing military cooperation that includes Nigeria's purchase of Turkish drones and T129 ATAK helicopters. The leaders pledged to diversify trade and increase investments, moving beyond the current structure where bilateral trade reached $688.4 million in the first eleven months of 2025, with Nigeria being Türkiye's largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa when energy is included.

A foundation for long-term strategic relations

Minister Bolat emphasized that Türkiye's approach is based on "trust and a long-term strategic partnership." This is supported by over 50 Turkish companies operating in Nigeria with investments valued around $400 million and Turkish contractors managing projects nearing $3 billion. The comprehensive agreements signal a mutual intent to solidify ties across diplomacy, security, and economic development for the foreseeable future.
