Debris from an intercepted drone killed one person after falling on a farm in the UAE's Fujairah emirate on Wednesday, local authorities said. The victim was identified as a Bangladeshi national, marking the first fatality from falling drone debris in the Gulf state amid ongoing Iranian retaliation.

Debris from an intercepted drone on Wednesday killed one person after falling on a farm in the UAE's Fujairah emirate on the east coast, according to local authorities. The incident occurred in the Al Rifaa area after air defenses successfully intercepted the drone, resulting in falling shrapnel, the Fujairah government's media office said on X. The victim was identified as a Bangladeshi national, it added. Authorities said specialized teams responded to the scene and handled the incident.

UAE under attack

The UAE has been the most frequently targeted Gulf state since the conflict began, with its defense systems intercepting 414 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles and 1,914 drones, according to compiled official data. Falling debris from intercepted projectiles has caused damage in multiple emirates, though this marks the first reported fatality.

Conflict context

Tensions in the region have escalated since Israel and the US launched a joint offensive against Iran on Feb. 28, resulting in more than 1,340 deaths according to Iranian authorities, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and more than 150 schoolgirls. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and infrastructure damage, while disrupting global markets and aviation.

Strait of Hormuz disruption

The conflict has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of global oil passes, with approximately 1,900 vessels stranded. The UAE has been preparing to support US-led efforts to reopen the strategic waterway by force, according to recent reports.
