Somali president praises Türkiye's crucial support amid sovereignty threats

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed profound gratitude for Türkiye's unwavering support as Somalia faces challenges to its territorial integrity. Speaking at a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul, he emphasized the critical nature of this partnership for his nation's stability and recovery.
Strong Turkish backing in difficult times
President Mohamud stated that Somalia has "strongly felt Türkiye's support" during a period marked by significant threats to its sovereignty and unity. He thanked President Erdogan for his leadership and recalled Türkiye's past role as a mediator between Somalia and the breakaway region of Somaliland, as well as its continued efforts to foster peaceful resolution.
Condemnation of Israel's recognition of Somaliland
The Somali leader explicitly condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's "aggressive stance," including actions affecting Somalia, labeling them unacceptable violations of international law and UN principles. This followed Israel's controversial decision to recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state last Friday, a move rejected by the Somali federal government.
Cooperation on energy and future development
Mohamud highlighted the deepening bilateral cooperation, particularly in security, humanitarian aid, and energy. He noted that offshore exploration activities have yielded positive results, with drilling operations expected to commence soon—a development poised to significantly contribute to Somalia's economic recovery in 2026 and beyond, managed with accountability for future generations.
